Research

Students as an historian you will need to be able to conduct research into specific issues. You will be required to utilise information skills and understand the process involved in researching. You will be required to use the appropriate text type in your research. For the purpose of this Action Project in "School History," you need to develop the skills to analyse and categorise, locate, communicate, organise, publish and evaluate.

Step 1 Analyse and categorise

  • " What areas are we interested in researching?
  • " What sources can provide us with the most information?
  • " What information can we leave out?
  • " How reliable/factual is the information?
  • " Can we analyse and compare information relating to the same event?
  • " Can we categorise this information into a form that narrows our research? (Eg. Pre-development of the school and post development )

Step 2 Locating

  • " Where can I go to find more information?
  • " What do we already have?
  • " What else do we need to find out?
  • " What is available in the form of Human resources? (Eg. School and Community Historians )
  • " How can local organisations help us?
  • " Can we utilise technology in this research?

Step 3 Communicate

  • " Have we engaged in effective communication with other groups so that everyone is in agreement with the designated areas of research?
  • " Have we engaged in effective communication with our facilitator concerning the task description or other enquiries?
  • " Have we communicated the specific needs of our group to the facilitator?
  • " Have we communicated effectively in interviews ?
  • " Have we used appropriate text in recording interviews?

Step 4 Organising

  • " Do we have enough useful information?
  • " How can we best use this information?
  • " In what order do we present this information?
  • " How do we combine information from different sources?

Step 5 Publishing

  • " How can we present this information?
  • " Have the appropriate text types being used?
  • " Have we ran a spell check on our completed works
  • " Did we acknowledge our sources?
  • " Who is our audience?

Step 6 Evaluation

  • " Did we achieve our purpose?
  • " Did we keep a portfolio/ logbook relating to our involvement in the whole Action Research Project?
  • " Does it highlight adequately our successes and problems throughout the research?
  • " What did we learn from this Project?
  • " Where do we go from here?
