Winmalee High serves the communities of the mid blue mountains. Students travel from nearby townships by train and by bus. Excellent transport links enable students who live some distance from Winmalee itself to attend the school.

The school runs Expo Days and Expo Information Evenings each year as a means to provide more information to parents and students that may wish to enrol at Winmalee High School.

Invitation to 2010 Year 7 Information Evenings

The Principal is happy to answer questions and show parents the school. The student population of over 900 means that the school can provide a wide choice of subjects. There are approximately 165 students in each year group in the junior school and approximately 120 in each senior year.

When a student enrols we like to know about his or her interests so that we can help new students to make friends and settle quickly into their new school. Please let us know about skills, interests and abilities of any enrolling student and we will try our best to ensure each student reaches his or her maximum potential.

Winmalee High School is a government school serving the public of NSW. The following information explains the rules that we follow.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES

The government school system in New South Wales exists to provide high quality education for all students. The Education Reform Act 1990 outlines the legal requirements for schooling.

• Parents may seek to enrol their child in the school of their choice.
• Schools are required to set an enrolment number to cater for anticipated local demand and to seek to ensure that every eligible local child has a place at his or her local school if he or she chooses to attend it.
• The primary criteria for acceptance of non-local enrolments will include the availability of appropriate staff and permanent classroom accommodation.
• The decision on where to enrol a student, and with what level of support, will depend on a number of factors, including a student's educational needs, the expressed desires of parents and caregivers, the capacity of the school to provide the level of support services required and the availability of support services at alternative locations.

CRITERIA FOR NON-LOCAL ENROLMENT APPLICATIONS TO WINMALEE HIGH

Criteria will include the following factors listed in priority order:

• Siblings already enrolled at the school;
• Special interests and abilities;
• Proximity and access to the school,
• Medical reasons;
• Compassionate circumstances;
• Structure and organisation of this school;
• Availability of subjects or combination of subjects; and
• Safety and supervision of the student before or after school
